Blinds vs. Shades - What Works For You?

When you first start looking for window treatments you may be confused by the terminology used and the numerous categories of products. To sum it up there are Shades, Blinds, and Shutters. In this article we’ll be exploring the differences between Shades and Blinds.

What is the difference?

While many customers may use the words interchangeably, they’re actually two separate categories (and those have subcategories).

Shades are defined as window coverings made of one or more pieces of fabric and include Honeycomb Shades (Cellular), Natural Woven Shades, Roller Shades, Roman Shades, Dual Shades, and Sheer Shades. Sometimes, Shades are called soft-styles because they tend to be made of soft, flexible materials.

Blinds are usually made of hard materials and are typically slat-style treatments. They are also known as hard-styles and include Faux Wood Blinds, Wood Blinds, Vertical Blinds, and Aluminum Blinds.

How to decide what is best?

You may have a preference already or you could be a square one of deciding. There are a few questions that are important to ask yourself that could help you decide which treatment style to explore. When in doubt, reach out to a Design Advisor for free.

Privacy & Light Control

Shades and blinds both help with privacy and light control in their own ways. Shades, for example, are typically made with a solid piece of fabric, so they are either open or closed. You can, however, choose light-filtering fabrics that allow some light through but still provide privacy. Blinds on the other hand usually allow open, closed, and tilted for a customizable level of privacy and light control.

For more privacy select shades and for more light control select blinds.

Cleaning

Blinds are by far the easiest treatment to maintain. Simply wipe down with a damp cloth or a duster. Shades can be vacuumed when dusty or gently spot cleaned with warm water. Serious grime will require more professional cleanings.

If you’re looking for something easier to clean, perhaps in a high-traffic area with kids or pets, blinds are your best choice.

Durability

It’s a no-brainer that blinds will stand up better to wear and tear due to them being made of solid materials like wood, PVC, and aluminum.

Style

While blinds are usually a classic choice and offer a traditional and modern look, you may be searching for a more ‘designed’ feel for your window treatments. This is where Shades shine. With thousands of material and color choices, you’re sure to find a shade that works with your home’s décor.

Insulation

Some customers are looking for a treatment that helps keep interior heating and cooling in while keeping the sun out. Shades usually do this best, particularly Honeycomb Shades.

Child & Pet Safety

If you have little ones (or critters) around the house you should look to a Certified Best For Kids choice. Choose cordless options to prevent strangulation and injury.

Specialty Shapes

If you’re looking to cover windows that are arched or triangular, Shades are going to give your more options. Explore Honeycomb Shades for the most versatility for your specialty shapes.
