Child & Pet Safety
WHY WE CARE. AND WHY YOU SHOULD.
Awareness and education are frontline warriors in the eternal campaign to keep loved ones safe. We know it’s not enough to simply produce and offer products that meet that goal; we want to partner with you to make smart, informed choices for your home and your family. From inspiration to purchase.
The challenge. Window treatment cords present a potential strangulation hazard to young children and pets.
Accidents with window treatment cords often involve older products that do not conform to current safety standards. We strongly encourage you to retrofit or replace corded window treatments with current safer designs in accordance with the recommendations of the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Council (CPSC) who advocate that only cordless window coverings be used in homes with small children.
Choices, Choices, Choices
Our trusted vendors are leaders in cordless innovation, and strive to ensures style and peace of mind work hand-in-hand. In each of our collections, there are smart options that enhance the safety of window treatments to help protect your children and pets.

Follow these safety steps
-
Move Furniture
All cribs, beds, couches, and other furniture should be moved away from windows so children cannot climb on them to get to the window or window blind cords.
-
Use Cordless
The most effective way to reduce safety risks is to select cordless only window coverings in homes with young children. We recommend you replace any treatments with cordless or treatments with inaccessible cords.
-
Retrofit Old Treatments
The Window Covering Safety Council offers Free Retrofit Kits and Instructions, on how you can make existing window treatments with cords safer. While this is a good start, it’s not full-proof, so we recommend replacing any corded window treatment with a new cordless product.
-
Apply to your entire home
Take these steps in every room of the home. Also, talk to people at the other places where your child spends time and ask them to also remove window blinds with cords to help keep your child safer.
-
Secure Cords & Chains
While the preference is totally cordless, some solutions may not allow for total cordless. Make sure tasseled pull cords are as short as possible. Continuous-loop pull cords on draperies and vertical blinds should be pulled tight and anchored to the floor or wall. Keep all window cords well out of the reach of children.
-
Professional Measure & Install
If you’re placing an order with Solana Shades, we recommend you allow our professionals to take your measurements and complete your install. Our team is trained to ensure the product is installed properly.

Not only are automated window treatments safer, but they’re also stylish and easy to use with smart home integrations.
Break-aways
We understand that not all clients select cordless options, we still take safety seriously. Most corded window treatments feature built-in safety features like break-away cords.
